AUDIO: LNP stays sane on same-sex “marriage”

AUDIO of my contribution to the LNP debate on same-sex marriage July 17th 2011

There are times when one can be proud of the goodwill and commonsense of a political party. Today was one such occasion, at the Hilton in Brisbane for the State Conference of the LNP (Liberal National Party – the Queensland centre-right political movement). Delegates passed our branch’s motion with overwhelming support (only one person spoke against it) this morning. The debate was held during an open session, with media present, so I am able to print the motion and my speech in moving the resolution, as below, and give the excerpt from ABC Radio above:

Motion to LNP State Conference, July 17th 2011 (Open Session)

That this Convention of the LNP affirms the fundamental right and deep emotional need of a child to have both a mother and a father, and notes that same-sex marriage makes it impossible for children to have both a mother and a father: therefore this Convention opposes the legislation of same-sex marriage.

Mr President,

The heart of opposition to same-sex marriage is that it means same-sex parenting, and same-sex parenting means that a child MUST miss out on either a mother or a father.

Marriage is a compound right, under Article 16 of the Universal Declaration of Human rights – not only the right to an exclusive relationship, but the right to form a family.

Therefore same-sex marriage carries the right to form a family – but any child created within that marriage, by artificial reproduction, will have no possibility, ever, of knowing both her mother and her father.

Of course there are tragic situations, now, where a child cannot have both a Mum & a Dad – such as the death or desertion of a parent – but that is not a situation that you would ever wish upon a child, and that is not a situation that any Government should inflict upon a child.

Yet legalising same-sex marriage WILL inflict that deprivation on a child.

Mr President,

There are some matters which are beyond the authority of any political party to tamper with.

Marriage is not a political or social invention, but a social reinforcement of a pre-existing biological reality: male, female, offspring. The great anthropologist Claude Levi-Strauss called marriage “a social institution with a biological foundation”. All our social customs and laws exist to buttress biology – helping to bind a man to his mate – for the sake of social stability, and above all for the sake of the child they might create.

Not all marriages do create children – but typically they do, and the institution exists for the typical case of marriage…

Homosexual relationships cannot create children – so society has no interest in regulating and reinforcing such relationships. They are of great importance to the individuals involved, and demand neighbourly respect and civility – but they do not meet nature’s job description for “marriage”.

In Queensland the Labor party disagrees, and their State conference voted last month to repeal nature; to declare that the sexual relationship of two men is no different to the average Mum and Dad, and that two men do no harm by forcing a little girl to life her whole life without a mother…

I trust that our Party will stand against this insanity; standing for the birthright of every baby to know – or at least have the possibility of knowing – the love of her own mother, and her own father.

I commend this resolution to your consideration.
